Study Introduction
Study Title: Assessments of sound perception and brain activation in response to paired sound and electrical stimulation of surface body regions
Thank you for your interest in this study!
The Translational Energy Stimulation-Sensing Laboratory (TESSLab) is dedicated to translational research that leads to improvements in medical technologies for individuals with hearing loss, tinnitus, and pain. In this research study, we are investigating sound perception and brain activation effects in response to paired non-invasive electrical stimulation of surface body regions (e.g., the outer ear, neck, back, hand, forearm, and leg) and sound stimulation. Recently, various methods of electrical stimulation paired with sounds have shown the potential of altering hearing perception and brain activation patterns. The induced plasticity by paired stimulation can potentially lead to therapeutic effects on hearing loss and tinnitus. We aim to better understand the optimal conditions of paired electrical stimulation and sound, which opens opportunities for applying this method to improving hearing loss or helping with hearing disorders such as hearing loss, tinnitus, and hyperacusis.
Below is a summary of the procedures to participate in this research study.
In-Person Research Visits:
At the beginning of the study, your hearing status will be screened to ensure your eligibility for the study. You will complete a survey about your hearing and tinnitus. Then you will receive about 30 minutes of paired stimulation (sound and electrical pulses delivered to surface body regions). We will also measure biosignals, ear, and brain activities while you listen to different sounds. These measures are routinely used in audiology clinics or auditory research labs. This study consists of at least five in-person visits. You may be asked to complete these study visits on consecutive days or every few or couple of days. Each visit will take approximately 2 - 3 hours.
Compensation:
You will receive $20 per hour of participation (at least 7 hours of total participation) plus an additional $10 for parking and transportation for each visit day. Payment will be sent after the completion of the study.
Next Steps:
On the next page, you will be directed to a pre-screening survey. If you pass the pre-screening survey, you will be contacted by a research team member to schedule your first study visit to complete eligibility screening and enroll in the study.
